Our Services - Exhaust System

service_exhaust diagram

The exhaust system is more than just a muffler. It is a series of pipes that run under your vehicle, connected to your muffler and catalytic converter. The main function of the exhaust system is to control noise and to funnel exhuast fumes away from passengers.

In many ways, the exhaust system works like a chimney in a house. It directs the byproducts from burning fuel aways from the people inside the house. A vehicle's exhaust system routes waste gases from the engine to the rear of the car, where they are discharged into the atmosphere. Exhaust gases contain dangerous substances such as carbon monoxide, which can be hazardous if allowed to flow into the passenger area of a vehicle.

The exhaust system also converts pollutants into less harmful byproducts, reduces the noise of the engine and directs exhaust gases so they can be used to heat air and fuel before they go into the engine's cylinders to be burned. Finally, the exhaust system provides just the right amount of backpressure into the engine to improve its fuel-efficiency and increase performance. All components of the exhaust system are connected with a series of clamps, hangers, flanges and gaskets. Some key componensts of the exhaust system include:

Exhaust Pipes:

Exhaust pipes are designed specifically for each vehicle model to properly route the exhaust to the back of the vehicle.

Exhaust Manifold:

The exhaust manifold acts like a funnel, collecting exhaust gases from all cylinders on the engine and releasing them through a single opening. Some engines have two exhaust manifolds.

Catalytic Converter:

The catalytic converter is designed to reduce the amount of harmful emission products by transforming pollutants into water vapor and thus, less harmful gases are released into the atmosphere.

The vehicle's muffler is a metal container with holes, baffles and chambers that muffles the exhaust noise coming from the engine.

The vehicle's resonator works with the muffle to reduce noise.

Tail Pipe:

The vehicle's tail pipe is found at the rear of the vehicle. The tail pipe is designed to carry exhaust gases away from the vehicle.
